I know that you all just read the comic for the bird cameos. So this is a little fanservice for you all. What, you were expecting kissing? Please.
But that is the end of this scene! Phew.
The book is in its final rounds of pre-press adjustment before it goes to print. Wish me luck getting it all wrapped up, and have a lovely holiday weekend, Americans!
Was I the last one waiting? Epochs passed,
tides tossed the island twice each day, sometimes
a lazy shushing, sometimes violent—then
tides would frighten me, count-down clocks striking
off the muzzy days and nights. Mosses grew
around me—pin cushion, pale shield, old man’s
beard. One gray day, walking on the sand,
I found a wooden shoe last, size 4, stamped
1903, the cobbler who’d worked with it
long gone—yet why only now had it washed
ashore? And one night, I saw 6 peonies
tossed on the rocks—Sarah Bernhardts, I thought—
fringed yellow hearts, their palest pink petals
tinged vermilion, strewn, shipwrecked children,
lonely drowned bodies white in the moon’s glow.
Where does anything come from?
I picked my way over granite to gather them,
then brought them back to the cabin
where their frail heads drooped from a Chinese vase,
nodding feelingly at the dead child’s shoe.
Then, a little interlude of pure joy, amnesiac,
so human—then hail, rain, wind, the flailing trees.

Behold, a page! Thank you for your patience as I put it up late. I’m still working on book files and that’s been a consuming task – so consuming, oh lord. Hopefully I will put it to bed this weekend, but if not I’ll take next week off to guarantee timely delivery of the print files and to catch up on store orders.
Arrrrrrrrr so ready to get this book off to the printer! So…ready…
One swapped video processor and my computer is back in action, and my noble attempt to switch to updating on Fridays at last sees some vindication. Thank you for your patience with the two week update drought!
I’m working to get the book’s files off to the printer this coming week; if nervous exhaustion sets in I might have to surrender, but I’ll give it the old college try, because, hell, I’d like to see how Ariana responds to a speech like this.
(And for those of you who can’t even remember the page before this one, here it is.)
Hey all, just a brief note: my computer is in the shop with a busted video processor (luckily nothing I have to pay for).
Since all of my image software and all of my shipping accounts are tied to that machine, this means no shipping and no comics updates until after I get it back; hopefully Friday, likely Saturday.
I will be checking e-mail in the meantime, so if you have any questions about an order or suchlike, please feel free to contact me. Thanks for your patience! Oy. I really wanted to get going on everything.
Funny to be reminded of one’s dependency on a particular piece of technology. I wonder how many medieval monks, scratching away at their illuminated manuscripts with goose quills, were driven to unexpected despair when their favorite feather supplier was struck by bird-plague.
