Luther: should get drunk more often.
I’ll be at the Alternative Press Expo this weekend in San Francisco, at table 636 (pdf map), just around the bend from my studiomates Erika Moen and Trixie Biltmore. (Pun Time: it is funny because they are always driving me around the bend! ha! ha!) I’ll have books, more books, a dwindling supply of prints (move fast!), stickers, and a few never-see-them-again Family Man items. Also sketches, in exchange for coffee money. Coffeeeeeee.
On the storefront: I am down to less than a dozen pre-orders, all requiring watercolor paintings, which are in process! Regular orders are now heading out the door and should all be on their way by next week. Light…at end…of tunnel…aghghgh!
Oh, this is getting fun. Despite pre-convention madness, there will be a page next week, because stalling out here would just be immoral. I swear, everybody; this is where THINGS START TO GET REAL.
In other news! Recently Oregon Public Broadcasting’s program, Oregon Art Beat, aired a seven-minute video feature on what it’s like to work at Periscope Studio, where I’ve been a member since 2007. After years of lame “Biff! Pow! Comics!”-type write-ups, this is a truly lovely little feature that conveys all the silliness, comraderie, and hard work we pack into one office suite.

Next week: more comic! Then: San Francisco. Yay!
Greetings all! This weekend I’ll be at the Small Press Expo in Bethesda, MD, at Table F2.
This is the first time Family Man will be sold on the East Coast! In addition to books I’ll also be selling off some of the last remaining extra goodies from pre-order packages – if you came late to the party and missed out on that cool Spinoza patch or a set of bookplates, this is your chance. There will also be all sorts of prints and some super-cool bookmarks! Everything is in limited quantities, so stop by the table ASAP if you want to be sure to get something!
After that I’ll be spending a few days in D.C., taking in many nerdy historical sites (several of an 18th century nature). I regret the disruption in updates and shipping, but a fresh infusion of income and a few days away from the grind are very welcome.
While I’m gone, I’ll be uploading a few of the wee watercolor paintings I’ve been doing for the high-end pre-order packages to the Family Man site. Check in on the 13th, 15th, and 17th! Then I’ll be back and updating for the 23rd.
See you soon!
I’m back from Comic-Con International and, given enough naps, I think I might even recover!
While there, I kept a little sketch journal of some of the wackier things I encountered, or, more factually, my reactions to them.

It was a crazy time – wonderful to see so many friends, colleagues, and readers, crazy costumes and bizarre set pieces. This was my first time going as a Professional Cartoonist ™ and that added a certain amount of angst – am I annoying everybody? Will I sell enough? Am I talking to the right people? How many boxes did I ship? But it was exciting to be at a point in my professional development where those were meaningful considerations. Six years ago, I was looking up to people like me! Pretty cool.
Thank you to everybody who spoke to me, bought a book, or gave a friendly smile at the convention. It’s a pleasure. Even if my feet still hurt two days out.
This week I’m participating in the mass hallucination that is Comic-Con International. I’ll be tabling in the Small Press Pavilion at table M-09 with my usual partner in crime, Erika Moen. That’s just a hop towards the Bayside Lobby from the Webcomics Pavilion, Oni Press, Random House, and many of your other favorite makers of comic book delights! I’ll be there with books, prints, patches, bookplates, and I’ll also be taking commissions.
You can also catch me in Room 3 on Saturday from 4:00-5:00pm for the Comics After Paper panel, hosted by my good friend Douglas Wolk. If you’re at all interested in where words and pictures are headed in the future, please attend! If you’ve never seen me on a panel before: I tend to be lively.
There will be a new page next week when I’ve recovered a little. SDCC attendees, I look forward to seeing your shining faces!
