15k! Dang!

Created: 18 Jun 2012 / Categories: Kickstarter, News

Incredible! Less than a week since the Kickstarter project launched, and we’ve passed the initial goal of $15,000. I’m blown away by the enthusiasm and generosity of all my backers. Thank you to all of you!

We still have almost a month left on the project, which means a month left to get a 10% discount on books and receive your copies (and all that sweet extra stuff!) before I put them on sale.

It also means we can start adding on new rewards and features! If we raise $17890, I’ll be able afford the inclusion of a NEW 11-page story in the anniversary edition of Bite Me! Guys, I have wanted to do this since forever, and I know we can make it. I can’t go on living as the only person who knows how Audric became a vampire, and why it involves a lute, an untimely sneeze, and a room full of nuns.

If we do make it to $17890, I’ll add a reward where a high-level contributor will have a cameo in the comic as the person indirectly responsible for all of Bite Me! happening.

And, on a related note, here is the image for the second 4×6″ art print – a little line-up of Claire through the ages! (Hey, when you’re that pale, you pick a palette and you stick with it.)

An amazing first day!

Fewer than 24 hours into the campaign and we’ve already raised nearly $7,000. That is pretty amazing; a huge thank you to everyone who helped promote the launch and especially all the people who dove right in and pledged! What a great day.

As part of my thank you for such a blazing beginning, here’s the image for the first of the three 4×6 art prints. This one commemorates the Danse Macabre 2.0 book.

Translated, the Latin reads “I was what you are, you will be what I am.” The original author is the Roman poet Horace, and variations of the motto have been inscribed on gravestones (and other instances of memento mori art) for centuries.

Next up will be the card that commemorates the anniversary edition of Bite Me! If you haven’t read the comic before, be sure to check it out at www.bitemecomic.com.

The Dylan Meconis Library 2012: now on Kickstarter

Created: 13 Jun 2012 / Categories: Books, Comics, Commerce, Kickstarter, News

Hello, all – for the last several months I’ve been scheming away on My Next Big Thing. (Or, you know, my Concurrent Big Thing, since my graphic novel Family Man continues apace as I accumulate new pages for Volume II.)

You might’ve noticed that I’ve been sold out of Bite Me! books for awhile. As in, over a year. I’ve gotten so many e-mails and messages asking about it, and it’s driven me crazy every time I’ve had to reply “they’ll be back again soon! When I can make them better quality! And add stuff! And the elves return to Middle Earth!”

You might also have noticed that there hasn’t been a print edition of Outfoxed yet. Most of the comments on it I sum up to “This is great! Where can I buy a copy?” Up until now the answer has been nowhere.

And, if you were one of the people who wanted to buy an original piece from my Danse Macabre 2.0 illustration series but missed out or couldn’t afford it, you’ve asked me when I was going to do a collection or issue prints.

Well, I have some relevant and exciting news for all of you, because I’ve decided it’s finally time to open up pre-orders and fund a print run!

Of all three books! Through Kickstarter!

Here, let me explain, via video. (It’s only four minutes, and there are jokes.)

I’m excited, gang. I’ve become a much better at this stuff – the practical side of bookmaking – since I last made a book, and I’ve become astronomically better at it since I first made a book. I know how to make a book more quickly, at higher quality, at a lower cost, and get it to you with greater speed. Perhaps most importantly, I know who to ask for help rather than trying to do everything by myself.

But I can dream up the fanciest stuff on earth to no avail – ultimately it all depends on you folks, my lovely and distinguished readers. I don’t want to make things you’re not interested in.

So, if you’re interested in owning a copy of any of these three projects – please consider contributing! The success (or failure) of this campaign will have a big impact on how I print my work in the future. (The future of Family Man volumes will hinge, at least in part, on how well this project does.) Creator-owned self-pub is absolutely the most effective way I can turn my work into income.

Thanks in advance, all!

Welcome to the new site! I thought it was time for a facelift. I’ve done so much work over the past couple of years that there was too much to show off in just one post. Please click around and explore; there’s new work in every category on the site, and every page is either new or features new content. If you run into any errors or missing links, please comment in this post, and I’ll fix it right up.

In the meantime, here’s a quick list of some recent news.

  • Eisner nomination! My short comic, Outfoxed, has been nominated for a 2012 Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic. TheEisner Awards are the marquee awards for comics published in the English language. I met Will Eisner when I was a teenager just getting started in comics, and his graciousness and enthusiasm were quite a gift from an elder master of the medium. News about a print version will soon be forthcoming. Read it online here.
  • I recently illustrated The Fifth Musketeer, a book for Lerner Publishing. It’s a choose-your-own-adventure book featuringthe Three Musketeers! There are thirty pages of comics and dozens of illustrations, and it’s a total blast. It was also colored by my friend Jenn Manley Lee, so you know it’s good. You can order it online now – it’s a great book for a reluctant reader or a book-loving kid who’s interested in comics.
  • I’ll be appearing at the first-ever Vancouver Comic Arts Festival (VanCAF) on Memorial Day weekend – May 27/28. This will be my first professional appearance in British Columbia. I absolutely love Canadian comic book readers and I’m very excited to be part of this festival’s launch.

Lastly, I’ve added all sorts of new art prints to my store in recent weeks. If you’re ready to stop staring into empty space and instead stare at some high-quality cartoon drawings, I am here to help. Here’s a little selection below, or you can visit the store to see the whole spread!
